What is Money Transfer Service Scheme (MTSS)?

Money Transfer Service Scheme (MTSS) is a way of transferring personal remittances from abroad to beneficiaries in India. Only inward personal remittances into India such as remittances towards family maintenance and remittances favouring foreign tourists visiting India are permissible.
Money transferred through any of these International Money Transfer services – Western Union, Moneygram, Ria Money Transfer, Transfast or Xpress Money can be received by both Indian nationals as well as foreign nationals from our office.

What are the types of remittances which can be received under the MTSS?

Only cross-border personal remittances, such as, remittances towards family maintenance or personal use and remittances favouring foreign tourists visiting India are allowed under this arrangement. Donations/contributions to charitable institutions/trusts, trade related remittances, remittance towards purchase of property, investments or credit to NRE Accounts are not allowed through this arrangement.

Is there any limit on the amount of money which can be sent under MTSS?

A cap of USD 2,500 has been placed on individual remittances under the scheme. In addition, thirty remittances can be received by a single individual beneficiary under the scheme during a calendar year.

Can cash payment be made to the beneficiary under MTSS?

Amounts up to INR 50,000/- may be paid in cash to a beneficiary in India. Any amount exceeding this limit shall be paid by means of account payee cheque. However, in exceptional circumstances, where the beneficiary is a foreign tourist, higher amounts may be disbursed in cash.
